Great look into the physics of the body

This book is a fascinating read for anybody interested in Physics and Physiology. The topics are well versed and focus on the applications of mechanics, thermodynamics, energy, and other physics topics within the human body.
Might be a bit tedious for someone with more of a biology background.
It's paperback, which is always "meh" for me, which brought the rating down.

The authors, an architect and a chemist, want to eliminate the concept of waste altogether, while preserving commerce and allowing for human nature. They offer several compelling examples of corporations that are not just doing less harm--they're actually doing some good for the environment and their neighborhoods, and making more money in the process. Environmentalists are normally the last people to be called shortsighted, yet that's essentially what architect McDonough and chemist Braungart contend in this clarion call for a new kind of ecological consciousness. The authors are partners in an industrial design firm that devises environmentally sound buildings, equipment and products. They argue that conventional, expensive eco-efficiency measures things like recycling or emissions reduction are inadequate for protecting the long-term health of the planet. Our industrial products are simply not designed with environmental safety in mind; there's no way to reclaim the natural resources they use or fully prevent ecosystem damage, and mitigating the damage is at best a stop-gap measure. What the authors propose in this clear, accessible manifesto is a new approach they've dubbed "eco-effectiveness": designing from the ground up for both eco-safety and cost efficiency. They cite examples from their own work, like rooftops covered with soil and plants that serve as natural insulation; nontoxic dyes and fabrics; their current overhaul of Ford's legendary River Rouge factory; and the book itself, which will be printed on a synthetic "paper" that doesn't use trees. Because profitability is a requirement of the designs, the thinking goes, they appeal to business owners and obviate the need for regulatory apparatus. These shimmery visions can sound too good to be true, and the book is sometimes frustratingly short on specifics, particularly when it comes to questions of public policy and the political interests that might oppose widespread implementation of these designs. Still, the authors' original concepts are an inspiring reminder that humans are capable of much more elegant environmental solutions than the ones we've settled for in the last half-century.

A New Way of Seeing and Making.

A new trend is beginning to emerge and its presence increasingly felt in our everyday lives. Let me offer an example: As you take a stroll through your neighborhood you are likely to see not just one container, but two lining the curbs of the street. To many, their existence resembles progress and an increased responsibility in the way we interact with our environment. In fact, to own and use a recycling bin (yes, you likely already guessed it) in some ways has progressed to an object of pride or a display of consumer responsibility. However, it’s early and you take little notice of them as they have become quite commonplace in your neighborhood. You continue your walk and pass a couple wearing matching slip-on shoes, which you recognize from an advertisement as being made of recycled rubber and various other recycled materials. In addition, they are each carrying a cotton grocery bag which they intentionally bring and reuse every time they make such a trip to the store. You head back down your street (feeling slightly guilty after the couple passed you and wondering if you shouldn’t also be using such a bag) and arrive back at your residence. You reach down and pick up the newspaper (made of recycled paper) just as your neighbor pulls into their driveway, windows down and music playing. You recognize the soothing voice of Jack Johnson and strain your ears to listen more closely:

If you're going to the market to buy some juice. You've got to bring your own bags and you learn to reduce your waste...And if your brother or your sister's got some cool clothes...You could try them on before you buy some more of those...Reuse, we've got to learn to reuse… And if the first two R's don't work out..and if you've got to make some trash...Don't throw it out...Recycle, we've got to learn to recycle…

I think I’ve made my point. The message is everywhere. And as Johnson’s song laid out for us above, the message is clear: Reduce, reuse, recycle. However, as widespread and as this message is becoming one must stop and ask: is it effective? William McDonough and Michael Braungart argue in Cradle to Cradle: Remaking The Way We Make Things that such a design goal is ineffective. Efficient? Yes. Effective? Not quite. They propose that such efforts, which they categorize as “eco-efficient” design, are only a “less bad” version of a poor design methodology that emerged from the industrial revolution. These efforts do not change the way products are designed, rather they seek to mitigate the effects of poor design. As result, they seek a negative goal of zero impact on the environment. The problems associated with this approach are numerous. First, it creates a dichotomy between the environment and industry, with gains to one necessitating a loss to the other (also known as zero sum, see the trend). This leads to conflict and opposing agendas between the two and does very little to reveal how the two may actually be of benefit to one another. Second, as mentioned, it only makes a bad thing, less bad. To reduce something bad or harmful does not negate its impact, but only delays it. As such, these efforts are by definition unsustainable. Third, at best it has a goal of seeking not to degrade the environment and certainly does not consider the possibility that good design may actually improve the environment. So what is the main problem with the design form that emerged from the industrial revolution? Put simply, it was designed to become waste. Or put another way, it was designed with waste in mind. The authors label such design, cradle-to-grave design, as it is purposed from inception to become waste. They suggest that to solve this design dilemma we must rethink our idea of waste, or rather not think of it as a possibility at all. If design is reborn without waste in mind then we will have new products and new systems that bring life and wasteful abundance to its surroundings. If we sow design with new life in mind, our industries and our environment will reap the benefits of this change in design methodology. The author’s point out that nature’s idea of waste or excess actually enriches its surroundings. What if we design products from inception that sought to do the same? What if we learned from nature’s example and designed our systems cradle-to-cradle?

We could easily call "Cradle" a dream, but the real world fascination you will find here pins Nobel Prize-quality medals on the lapels of Michael & Bill.
Cradle gives us hope that the excesses of the Mechanical Age do not suffocate us with their formaldehyde gases, but will energize an age where taking a problem to its highest level of abstraction yields tools to solve the thorniest issue we face. Do our actions mirror our reputation?

I highly recommend this inspiring work. From the very surface it is printed on (not paper!) to the bold vision it conveys, McDonough and Braggart have gifted the world with this call to action. This should be required reading for every Industrial Designer, Interior Designer/Decorator, Architect, Engineer, et al. I will definitely be reading their next, "Upcycle". This book is now part of my permanent library, to always remind me when designing, "waste equals food." Highly recommend!

About the Editors:

Ibrahim M. M. El Emary received his doctor of engineering degree in 1998 from the Electronic and Communication Department, Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University, Egypt. From 1998 to 2002, he was an assistant professor of computer sciences in different faculties and academic institutions in Egypt. From 2002 to 2010, he worked as visiting assistant and associate professor of computer science and engineering in two universities in Jordan. Currently, he is a professor of computer science and engineering at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. His research interests cover various analytic and discrete event simulation techniques, performance evaluation of communication networks, application of intelligent techniques in managing computer communication networks, and performing comparative studies between various policies and strategies of routing congestion control subnetting of computer communication networks. He has published more than 150 articles in various refereed international journals and conferences covering computer networks, artificial intelligent expert systems, software agents, information retrieval, E-learning, case-based reasoning, image processing, and pattern recognition wireless sensor networks, cloud computing, and robotic engineering. Also, he has participated in publishing seven book chapters in three international books (published by Springer Verlag, IGI Publisher, and NOVA Science Publisher) as well as Editor of two books from international publishers (LAP Lampert-Germany). He has been included in Marquis Who’s Who in the world 2013 edition.

Dr. S. Ramakrishnan received his bachelor of engineering degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 1998 from the Bharathidasan University Trichy, and his mechanical engineering degree in Communication Systems in 2000 from the Madurai Kamaraj University Madurai. He received his Ph.D. degree in Information and Communication Engineering from Anna University Chennai in 2007.

He has 12 years of teaching experience and 1 year of industry experience. He is a professor and the head of the Department of Information Technology, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology, Pollachi, India. Dr. Ramakrishnan is a reviewer of 14 international journals such as IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IET Journals (formerly IEE), ACM Computing Reviews Elsevier Science, International Journal of Vibration and Control, IET Generation Transmission and Distribution, etc. He is in the editorial board of six international journals. He is a guest editor of special issues in three international journals including Telecommunication Systems Journal of Springer. He has published 77 papers in international/national journals and conference proceedings. Dr. S. Ramakrishnan has published three books on computational techniques and speech processing.

He has also reviewed three books for McGraw Hill International Edition and two books for ACM Computing Reviews. He is a convenor of the IT board in Anna University of Technology-Coimbatore Board of Studies (BoS). He is guiding 10 PhD research scholars. His biography has been included in Marquis Whos’s Who in the World 2011 edition. His areas of research include digital image processing, soft computing, human–computer interaction, wireless sensor networks, and cognitive radio.

It's a good book for postgraduate students that want to learn more about wireless sensor networks. It's not a low-level or introductory book about this topic.

Nils Dalarsson has been with the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Theoretical Physics in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1999. His research and teaching experience spans 32 years. Former academic and private sector affiliations include University of Virginia, Uppsala University, FSB Corporation, France Telecom Corporation, Ericsson Corporation, and ABB Corporation. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics, an MSc in Engineering Physics, and an MSc in Education.

Mirjana Dalarsson is affiliated with the Research and Development program at Ericsson Corporation. She holds a Licentiate degree in Engineering Physics and has more than 25 years of research and teaching experience. Former affiliations in the academic and private sector include the Royal Institute of Technology, Belgrade University, Uppsala University, and ABB Corporation.

All the Math You Need for GR

This book, alone, was what got me through my General Relativity course. The text we were using didn't include much math, and the professor didn't want to discuss the mathematical aspects of what we were doing. So I came upon this book armed with a vague physical understanding, but mathematically clueless. Fortunately, this book seems to have been written for precisely such a situation!

In a remarkably clear and concise manner, this book manages to:
- introduce the notations that are commonly used
- demonstrate how a physical system can be represented using the new formalisms
- outline the common mathematical operations that can be performed under this formalism
- describe how these operations are different from similar operations that the reader is already familar with
- show how these mathematical operations are physically relevant to a particular system

The other mathematical texts on this topic all seem to start off slowly with several chapters full of things that, as a physicist, I don't particularly want to know about. This book, by contrast, simply skips right to the parts that are relevant to relativistic calculations, and as a result the reader need not waste time trying to understand mathematical concepts that will not be useful to him.

In short, it's absolutely perfect if you need help with the mathematical aspects of relativity. Its physical explanations are brief, however, so if it's the physical concepts themselves that are troubling you, it might be better to start with a more descriptive book.

One of the best

This book starts out with a walk through the gymnastics of manipulating tensor indices's. Tensors can have any number of indices's attached to them. Learning to work with these indices's comes up many times for example in QFT(Quantum Field Theory). It is really basic, but until you see it done a number of time(as in this book) it can be quite confusing. This book teaches you to do this, and does a very good job. This includes the famous Einstein summation convention.

The book also covers co-variant derivatives, which are really important for taking derivatives in curvilinear coordinate since the unit or basis vectors change. Again the book does an excellent job of explaining this. This leads to the next subject of Christoffel Symbols, which come up when taking a co-variant derivative. The book explains these in terms easy to understand.

The book then goes into differential geometry. This is where the book really shines. This section is really a critical part, since you will need the ideas learned here to derive Einstein Field Equations. There is just the right amount of theory here so you can understand what is going on under the hood, but not too so much that you lose all prospective of what is going on.

Then this book covers special relativity. The book really shines here since the approach is a mature one, not watering down the math, but not over doing it either. The book has now taught you about Tensor Analysis, so the author can use it to cover special relativity. A lot of special rel. books do not cover special rel. using this mature approach, they tend to water down the math, but this book has prepared you for it so why not use it.

Also in the Special Rel. sections your Electrodynamic skills will be improved. You are now re-introduced to Maxwell's equations. You might have seen some of the mathematics before in an Electrodynamics course, but this book has given you the math skills you need to really understand it. So now you learn the tensor way to express Maxwell's equations. At this point you start feeling good about your Tensor Analysis skills. You seem to feel the whole universe coming together.

Then the moment you have been reading the book for. The author's start covering General Relativity. As you start reading this part of the book you start feeling good. You are really able to follow what is being done, because the book has done it's job and you have all the background to follow along. Then the most magic moment comes as you are shown how the metric tensor(g) is really the gravitational potential. And now it all comes together and you see how geometry plays a roll in the theory of gravity.

The rest of the book is applications of Einstein's field equations to cosmology. The book also goes into black holes. These are the hardest sections of the book but again the book does such a good job of teaching you what you need, these sections also flow.

In order to get the full benefit from this book you must go through all the steps in the book. In reality most of it is just algebra. I also recommend supplementing this book with Schaum's outline on Tensor Calculus. A lot of people way more knowledgeable in the subject than I am have also recommended this book.

Relativity Demystified is another good book, but it takes a little different approach than this book. It uses Cartan's equations to calculate the Christoffel and Ricci Tensors, but a lot can be learned from doing things a different way. The method called one-forms is really important in learning other subjects. I really recommend Relativity Demystified to get a fuller background for when you read more advanced books. It has typo's and wrong equations in it, but you can find them.

After studying these three books you will be ready to read way more advanced books. These books also give the background required to understand QFT since it requires a very good understanding of Tensors and Relativity. A lot of people have trouble with QFT not because of their Quantum Mechanics skills but because of their lack of Tensor and Relativity skills.

When you are finished you will find General Relativity is not so hard, and there are really only a few ideas behind the whole subject. I always like to supplement textbooks with at least one or two other books. Finding the books that best supplement a books is sometime hard and I have helped you with two in-expensive books.

The does an excellent job of developing the mathematics associated with these subjects

The book is mostly mathematics, exactly what it claims to be, with just enough narrative to keep the reader oriented. I completed my second pass through it, this time working through the math in detail with pencil and notepad. The exposition is tractable. The book is self-contained although vector calculus, partial differential equations, and linear algebra are necessary background. There are no problems to solve but after developing the mathematics, Chapter 19 presents the Schwarzschild solution in detail by applying basic results and illustrating how to organize the material to develop solutions. The does an excellent job of developing the mathematics associated with these subjects.

Insightful to the Soul

I couldn’t put this book down. That was weird. It was a book about marketing, right? Well, maybe that was part of it. I’m not a marketer. I’m a pastor with a huge interest in people. I like to know how people think, what people think, what is driving them, what are they missing. I’m constantly wondering how I can apply the gospel to their lives so that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ will bring meaning to their lives as it has mine. But I wasn’t thinking this book was going to be as insightful and well written as it was. I started reading it Sunday afternoon. I thought I would read a chapter here, look over the introduction, skim the table of contents, read another chapter over there. That’s what your do with marketing books isn’t it? No, not this one. This book turns pages like Dan Brown novel, only this book has research and plausible hypotheses to work on and convey. Part of me felt like I was binge watching Sons of Anarchy again, getting off the couch sometime the next afternoon still wearing my Pajamas, and in need of a shower.
The book was fascinating because this man is a professional people watcher, who understands people better than an anthropologist. Yeah, I’ve read some anthropology in my time, it’s kind of funny they think they are detached observers as they develop their theses, and write their books. Sometimes they have a thing or two to say worthwhile. Martin Lindstrom is different. He’s a man on a mission, he doesn’t even want to be a detached observer. He feeds off of these people, as he peers into the dark recesses of their souls. And his hypothesis are falsifiable, at least to some extent. He knows he is right when his insight has helped a company sell you a bill of goods.
As a pastor, that was a bit of the disturbing factor that kept me glued to the book. It is about selling people stuff, in a manner of speaking it’s about figuring out what a person covets, and then selling it to them. Martin finds the insecurities that drive people, looks at how they cope with these insecurities, he looks at how people view themselves, the imbalances they have as individuals and cultures, their vulnerabilities, but also their strengths and joys. In doing so he offers insight into your own soul, which is the scariest place in the habitation of any person. The book made me examine myself, even as reading the book I could see Martin examining himself from time to time in the same way. The insights were not always pretty. Yet the process I found to be cathartic. The book is about a lot more than marketing from that perspective. A person expects a marketer like Martin to then show how a person can play on and exploit people with this knowledge, yet that really isn’t Martins shtick. Reading the book, I got the notion that he actually, truly loves the people he is working with and for. It’s that that drives him far more than the money. It’s that aspect of the book that makes it so intriguing. Yes, he will use it to deliver a product you pay for, but he wants that product to deliver what it was you were looking for.
As a pastor, his insights into the diminishing role of religion, and consequently the increasing role of superstition, as well as consumerism were both helpful and heartbreaking. But then that’s the way truth works. It does make me wonder also to what extent the increasing use of consumerist models to increase church growth both exacerbate that problem, and help to alleviate it for the people the church serves, and desires to serve.
I think any civic minded person will find this book to be a valuable read. Pastors, business men, local politicians, and social workers, really anybody that has an interest in people and would like to better understand the people they are trying to serve will find this book to be and unexpected but joyful read.

An enjoyable diversion.

Martin Lindstrom was selected in 2009 by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Six years later Lindstrom continues to be influential as he travels the world to find “the tiny clues that uncover huge trends.” The results of his search can be found in his new book, Small Data.

Lindstrom’s book is similar to what Malcolm Gladwell does in books like Outliers and The Tipping Point, that is, show us secret patterns that reveal important clues to how people behave. No detail is too small to escape Lindstrom’s notice. He dives into all the out of the way and hidden nooks and crannies in people’s homes, places of business, playgrounds – any place people gather that reveal who they are and what is important to them.

Businesses large and small pay for the information Lindstrom discovers about what people truly want and value. For example, Lowes Supermarket headquartered in North Carolina hired Lindstrom to revitalize falling sales and that is just what Lindstrom did. Lindstrom tells us that: “The small data insights that helped transform a local supermarket into a national phenomenon began in the Russian Far East, and drew inspiration from cultures as various as Japan, China, France, and Italy.”

I went online to Lowes site and immediately noticed the Chicken Kitchen and Sausage Works that Lindstrom mentions in his book. Thanks to Lindstrom, these are now “happening places” in the store where employees take mundane tasks and turn them into entertainment for happy customers.

It is fair to say that Small Data is a treasure trove of information that gives us facts and figures about what is special and unusual about the people in various countries and cultures all over the world. Lindstrom is on the trail 300 out of 365 days each year and seems to be a tireless traveler who is energized by all that he sees and experiences.

I asked myself: Who is the audience for his book? Certainly, anyone interested in how goods and services are marketed and sold. Also, readers who want to learn about the quirks and idiosyncrasies of people around the world. Lindstrom is an entertaining storyteller, but I must admit, I was sometimes overwhelmed by the amount of data packed into each chapter. Small Data is not a book that needs to be read cover to cover, or in any order for that matter. The reader can stick his or her finger into any place in the book and find entertainment and information.

Recommended, not so much as a cover to cover read, but as something that is an enjoyable diversion.

Very, very interesting book, and not what I had expected

It is not the book that I expected.

What I expected was a book that talked about how to process "big data" in an effort to find the small inconsistencies that are what is really important.

What the book is about is a biopic by Martin Lindstrom about his work as a market researcher.

Like Sherlock Holmes, Martin is an expert at observation, often going through trash, bedroom drawers, and personal letters to get at the data.

Martin then compiles his team's collected data and helps companies create successful brands.

The stories are interesting and engaging.

Martin does his best to keep his findings and stories politically neutral, but you can tell where Martin stands on most issues of the day by the end of the book. He finds the USA is full of fear, and the people are not free -- that is a bit of a hint of his political leanings. He has also spent a lot of his time in Russia and China -- that should help too.

If you can overlook the political commentary disguised as insights, you will probably enjoy most of his stories.

Some of the observations are very insightful. The bit on the effects of personal internet devices on the millenials is worth the price of the book alone.

All in all, this is a very interesting book.

You will enjoy it more if you are aware of the political aspects of the book before reading.
