like the previous two

At the risk of repeating myself a little, this book, like the previous two, is a page turner for the most part, but there no surprises. It and they are very formulaic. I again have to say as I have said in previous reviews that his treatment of women is just awful. I read the next book in the series because I had already downloaded it, but I have switched to a new author and new series. There are just too many things that don't quite add up in terms of plot and every book seems to be the same story: the bad guys are mostly idiot monsters with not an iota of redeemable quality and I can't, for the life of me, figure out why the good guys are slaughtering all the bad guys. Other than survival and this memory of an idea of a country maybe, but what the good guys build when they have a chance to build is not much better than what the bad guys build. Everyone's fighting to have their own version of sleazy style Los Vegas country. Enough's enough!

I love this series of stories by Mack Maloney. I like the way the action keeps moving after America was attacked and basically decimated and now, through the will and determination of a group of courageous warriors, America is once again returning to her once powerful status. It love that it's all about fighting for freedom and the American way of life.

This review doesn't just pertain to this book but, the whole Wingman Series. Those of us who like Sci-Fi or Fantasy will love this series. I am currently on book 14 and I can hardly put one of these books down. Action, adventure, a little sex, booze, guns etc. what's not to like? One of the all time best series I have ever read!

May be good for beginners who dislike the format of Android's online docs

I bought this book with the intention of learning how to use the Android's GPS facility to send coordinates information to a remote server via a JSON object. I already had sufficient knowledge of HTTP requests and responses but I just needed to know how to do it in Android using Java. Even though the contents of this book mentioned that it covered Android GPS it sadly didn't cover what I needed, therefore it wasn't much use.

Much of the book seems to just be a re-write of Google's online Android programming documentation, however this book obviously covers a lot less. I eventually had to search the web for the information I needed. If are a complete beginner and you need a book to get you started in the basics of Android development then this book may help you out. Sadly, it hasn't been much use for me yet!

This book is like a tool to optimize your project, the author have made a good job in Android 5 Programming by Example, with a good introduction based on top updated features on Android API, you can start develop all kind of project with the small but functional projects presented in each chapter, I was finding myself a little outdated and searching for a good introduction about new elements in Android 5, I am not a beginner in Android Development, but, I wasn't able to build elegant apps like I feel now, this book gives me the power and confidence to start new projects, now Android is more mature, beautiful, organized, and the author guides you from very beginning to end and marketing your project, I would recommend this book for anyone, even if you never programmed an Android app before.

Great book, at first i was a little daunted with using the xml on the UI when the same can be done with just placing widgets and the xml being updated automatically, but as i got going further i could not get away from the laptop and found myself glued to this book! building the new features for android 5 was a real enjoyment and gave me some great ideas for future apps.
Adding CardView widgets was something i was looking forwards to and this was covered early on when building a tourist kind of app screen, this is a great tool to use and i am sure all will be pleased.
I highly recommend this book for all you developers as it covers some really neat stuff.

It features detailed portrayals of self-sustaining agricultural methods and cutting-edge industrial advancements, revealing Mr. London's foresight and personal contributions to the "green" living we so value today. Full of betrayals, deceit, and tragedies, it's an interesting picture of the advent of the new sciences of psychology, psychiatry, and symbolism coupled with the lifestyle of London's time.

Good content but used with caution

The previous poster said the book is outdated which I agree but only to the Eclipse setup/GUI-Layout part. The Eclipse/ADT is doing intermittently updates breaking old codes, which are not difficult to fix if you are googling solutions from internet. Ch4:Tip-Calculators is a little bit tedious but it is a good practice for beginners (for patience and discreet). Ch5:the broken code in Twitter-search is an easy fix if you know the HTTP query syntax. Ch6-8: three games are good examples for learning graphics/gaming in Android but they are not object-oriented, a pity. Ch9-10: a simple sketching program and an address book app. Ch10:Route tracker using Google API which is a good practice for knowing the details of using Google maps. Ch11-12:Slideshow apps which delve into media API for playing audio/video and taking pictures.
All in all, this book is good, and could be used as a textbook under the condition that the instructor must read the content and test/fix all programs before conducting teaching. This book is also beneficial to experienced programmers coming to Android for the first time. However, this book is not for pure beginners.

Too far behind, no updates/errata

I chose this as a textbook for a new course I am teaching on Android. I trusted Deitel. No more. The step-by-step examples to setup an Android app are based on a much older version of the ADT. They not only don't work, but some of the techniques break the apps. For example, to change the layout, they have you delete the main.xml and create a new one. Much better in ADT 21 to use outline view to change layout.
The first app to build (Tip Calculator) has way too many fields to create. The second 'Favorite Twitter Search' example does not work, probably because twitter changed the API since the book was out.
I emailed Deitel in January with my issues, and have received no answer except that Paul was out of town. There is no 'errata' available, so I assume they no longer support this text.
Too bad. I'll never use a Deitel book again.

If there were negative stars allowed...

This book is simply terrible. Other reviewers have mentioned that it is outdated, and I can cut them a little bit of slack for that, Android has been a fast-evolving OS and it doesn't take long for printed materials on the subject to become outdated. Knowing this, one would expect some sort of update from the publisher- the Twitter API change was not a huge deal, easy enough to adapt the example app over to the new API, but the Google maps API change rendered the RouteTracker app worthless and it should be the publishers responsibility to port their example code over to the new API and provide it on their site. In general the book did a very poor job of explaining what you were doing, just blocks of code with vague documentation. It looks like they are releasing a new version of this book which will probably contain all of the corrections and additions that should have been provided to anyone unlucky enough to buy the 1st edition, but if the history of support that they've shown for the 1st edition repeats the book will be an expensive paperweight in 6 months and you'll have to wait around for the 3rd edition.

This extensive experiment is documented project by project, with detailed discussion of how each project satisfied the seven rules, accompanied by floorplans, elevations, street grids, axonometric diagrams and photographs of the scaled-down model which clearly illustrate the discussion.

About the Author

Christopher Alexander is a builder, craftsman, general contractor, architect, painter, and teacher. He taught from 1963 to 2002 as Professor of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, and is now Professor Emeritus. He has spent his life running construction projects, experimenting with new building methods and materials, and crafting carefully articulated buildings--all to advance the idea that people can build environments in which they will thrive.



Acting on his deeply-held conviction that, as a society, we must recover the means by which we can build and maintain healthy living environments, he has lived and worked in many cultures, and built buildings all over the world.



Making neighborhoods, building-complexes, building, balustrades, columns, ceilings, windows, tiles, ornaments, models and mockups, paintings, furniture, castings and carvings--all this has been his passion, and is the cornerstone from which his paradigm-changing principles have been derived.

I bought this book years ago and lent it to a developer who never returned it.
So, I re-bought it recently through Amazon and am delighted I re-added to my Christopher Alexander collection.
As a professional planner/urban designer/community 'instigator' I found this little book powerful in my own quest to bring about a new Progressive Movement -- community by community.
The way Alexander and his cohorts describe how to do this is in almost direct conflict with what I consider the wrong-headed economic realities of the last century, and we must figure out how to change those before we keep creating huge plastic developments that have the shelf life of a carton of milk and are destroying out planet.

Christopher Alexander has a very unique talent for integrating sophisticated design theory into simpe poetic language that inspires and informs in a way that is a call to action. The Center for Environmental Structure continues to form a cornerstone of architectural and urban design research.
