About the Author
John M. Butler is a NIST Fellow and Special Assistant to the Director for Forensic Science, Office of Special Programs, at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Butler earned his PhD from the University of Virginia while doing DNA research in the FBI Laboratory's Forensic Science Research Unit. He has won numerous scientific awards, including being named Science Watch’s #1 world-wide high-impact author in legal medicine and forensic science over the last decade (July 2011). He has over 150 publications in this field and is a frequent presenter on the topic of DNA typing, and has authored four other DNA Typing books including Advanced Topics in Forensic DNA Typing: Methodology. Fundamentals and Beyond

I needed some very concise and specialized information about binning strategies, and I did find it inside this book. In general from the reading of this book, I must say that almost anyone interested in the field should read it.
It is wonderful to be able to read one of those that have contributed so much to our area of work. And for those of us that haven't t got the chance to listen to Dr Butler lectures, it is very nice to read his opinions in the amenable and organized way he presents the whole issue.

No one loves studying DNA

But the book was exactly as advertised, its in great shape and has come in very use full in class. DNA is not an easy topic, but this book/author has a way of breaking it down into understandible sections. I've had 2 other DNA books, and simply could not keep up with the words used and the pace of the book. This is not the case with this book. Very satisfied.

If you want to learn about DNA Typing ask the expert

Dr. Butler was one of the developers of DNA typing. I have heard him lecture on it several times. He recommended this as a starter. I am enjoying getting more in-depth information than I could get in a lecture. This is a good book to start learning about this interesting subject and I would recommend it to those trying to get started in this field.

About the Author
Dr. John Relethford holds the rank of Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, and has received a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He received his BA (1975), MA (1978), and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in anthropology from the State University of New York at Albany. His textbook, The Human Species: An Introduction to Biological Anthropology, was first published in 1990, and is currently in the eighth edition. He has also written Genetics and the Search for Modern Human Origins and Reflections of Our Past: How Human History is Revealed in Our Genes, and is coauthor of Human Biological Variation. In addition, he has authored or coauthored over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, 18 book chapters, and numerous book reviews and other publications. He has served as both President and Vice-President of both the American Association of Physical Anthropologists and the American Association of Anthropological Genetics. He has served on the editorial boards of many journals, and is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Now in a fully updated fourth edition, John Relethford's The Human Species: An Introduction To Biological Anthropology is divided into three major sections: Evolution and Diversity in Human Populations; Our Place in Nature; and Human Evolution. Updated coverage of the fossil record focuses on broad general groups of early hominids; principles of miroevolution show shown as they apply to the modern human species; the concept of race is thoroughly discussed from a biological and evolutionary perspective; and new interpretations of the number of species of early Homo and Neanderthal DNA are explored. The Human Species is an ideal introductory text for students of anthropology, and informative reading for any non-specialist general reader with an interest in the contemporary status of research in human evolution today.

This book was required for my Intro to Anthropology class. It was easy to read and follow. Since the class was a required general education class, I had to go into the class with an open mind about what I was required to learn. I did not feel as if the book was attempting to influence my thoughts or beliefs. The book is organized effeciently and productively. I did not get bored reading it.

If Jantzen's view of art history seems lifeless and distant, Henry Sayre has something to say to you. It's the best survey I've seen in terms of making art accessible and demonstrating a continuing tradition. The CD-ROM is an excellent bonus, especially for readers who have never seen an artist at work. Ever wonder how a print is made? There's a demonstration.

Poor Quality

I purchased this book new and have only used it a few times and the pages are coming loose from the bindings. Poor quality for how much you pay for the book, I would not expect it to be falling apart. So not only do I get to pay an outrageous price for the book in addition it will have no resale value for me to get some of my money back out of a book I will never again use.

This is a Laugh-Out-Loud book with a great small-town feel

This is a Laugh-Out-Loud book with a great small-town feel. The confrontation between Wronged Wife and Brazen Hussy Mistress in the beauty shop is classic. I look forward to seeing more from these characters. Quite a departure from Sharon Sala's mysteries and intense relationship stories, and I love this new side of her work.

Count Your Blessings

In Count Your Blessings (formerly Color Me Bad) we are introduced to a group of women in Blessings, a small town in Georgia. Curl Up and Dye is the hair salon in Blessings, run by 4 women. It is a hub of activity, change, and friendship. It is in Curl Up and Dye that customer Patty finally admits to herself the direction her life is taking and the changes she's going to have to make. She's suspected her husband, the preacher, is having an affair ... and it is in Curl Up and Dye that she confronts not only this reality, but the other woman!

This sets in motion change and new beginnings for not only Patty, but many of the women in Blessings. When Patty takes charge of her life and her future, she is at first ostracized, but soon admired. But her acceptance and friendship from the ladie's in Curl Up and Dye is never changing.

Sharon Sala gives us a fast paced, witty novella with Count Your Blessings. Count Your Blessings is a novella about change, hope and new beginnings. Patty demonstrates well that you can either curl up and cry, or move on to greater adventures when your life takes an unexpected turn. Patty unexpectedly turns out to be someone others can learn from...ok, not from everything she did, but who wouldn't want to do what she did if given the opportunity?

From the blurb, I was expecting a story that carried the feel of Steel Magnolias, with the southern overlay, a hair salon being the heartbeat where worries and gossip are shared equally, with a few quirky moments from characters to enhance the story. What I got, despite the abbreviated length of this book was so much more: depth and heart and soul-searching that introduce the town and people of Blessings, Georgia as viewed through the catalyst of a simple appointment at the hair salon.

Patty June is the preacher’s wife, and in the middle of a small personal crisis, coming face to face with her husband’s mistress at the Curl Up and Dye. It doesn’t go well (hilariously so) as Patty June decides enough is enough, and takes out her frustration with her husband’s infidelity on Bobette, his mistress. Ruby (the owner), Vesta and Velma (twin hairdressers) and Mabel, the manicurist have a front row seat to the goings-on, and are first in line for the recap after the fact.

Patty June doesn’t necessarily come off well in terms of town approval after her meltdown, but the shockwaves her explosion has caused for all the men in town is hilarious. With an offhanded remark about another man’s faithlessness, and plenty of characters who behave in slightly over the top ways that are actually quite normal for a small town story, the pages flip by.

You’ll want to savor this story, laugh often and dive right into the next. The prequel to The Curl Up & Dye, you’ll want to grab that just as I did to enjoy Sala’s writing and the town of Blessings.

About the Author
PAUL KNOX received his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Sheffield, England. After teaching in the United Kingdom for several years, he moved to the United States to take a position as professor of urban affairs and planning at Virginia Tech. His teaching centers on urban and regional development, with an emphasis on comparative study. He serves on the editorial board of several scientific journals and is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Small Town Sustainability (Birkhauser), Metroburbia USA (Rutgers University Press), Cities and Design (Routledge), and The Geography of the World Economy (Hodder) as well as Pearson’s Urbanization, Third Edition and World Regions in Global Context, Fourth Edition. In 2008 he received the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the Association of American Geographers. He is currently a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech, where he also serves as Senior Fellow for International Advancement.

LINDA MCCARTHY received her Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Minnesota, USA, and her B.A. from University College Dublin. She is an associate professor in the Department of Geography and the Urban Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is also a certified planner. Her teaching centers on cities and globalization. Her research focuses on urban and regional economic development and planning in the United States, Europe, and China. Her recent academic journal articles have been on regional cooperation instead of wasteful competition for corporate investment; government subsidies for automobile plants; environmental justice and brownfield redevelopment; and the globalization of the economy. Linda is the co-author of another book, The Geography of the World Economy (Hodder), with Paul Knox and John Agnew.

About the Author
Jeremy McCarter wrote cultural criticism for New York magazine and Newsweek before spending five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater, where he created, directed, and produced the Public Forum series. He served on the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is writing a book about young American radicals during World War One. He lives in Chicago.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Book, Music, and Lyrics/Alexander Hamilton) is the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer-lyricist-star of Broadway's In the Heights--winner of four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Choreography with Miranda receiving the award for Best Score. Additionally, he is the co-composer and co-lyricist of Broadway's Tony-nominated Bring It On: The Musical and provided Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story. Miranda, along with Tom Kitt, won the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the 67th Annual Tony Awards. In 2015, Miranda was named as a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He lives with his family in New York City.

How lucky we are to be alive right now

Let's just accept it...when Lin-Manuel Miranda does something, he does it right, all the way, and maybe better than anyone else.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen "Hamilton" twice. I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. I've been a musical theatre geek for five decades and have never felt this excitement about any show (with the possible exception of A Chorus Line). So when I heard months ago that Lin and former New York magazine drama critic Jeremy McCarter were putting together a book about the creation of "Hamilton," I pre-ordered my copy and started counting the days. Now it's here, and.... wow. Just wow.

Given the show's deserved status as a cultural phenomenon that will be playing to sold-out houses for years, it would have been easy to just throw together a "behind-the-scenes" book with a few interviews, toss in some publicity stills, and have a guaranteed best-seller. This "Hamiltome" couldn't be further from that. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. And all of this is thoughtfully organized and packaged in a beautifully bound volume with ivory deckle-edged paper - a book like books used to be. (Trust me, this is one book you don't want to read on Kindle; it's actually a sensory experience to hold it and turn the pages.)

As McCarter notes in the Introduction, the title "Hamilton - The Revolution" has two meanings. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way." Do what you can to see "Hamilton," either on Broadway or when it comes to your town. It's unlike anything else. Until then, this book and the original cast recording will get you as close as possible to an orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

A stunning creation, but I knew that before I even saw it...

This book is a thing of beauty! I ordered it early and it - literally - just arrived at my front door. Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. The design is exquisite, the words flow as beautifully as the pictures from page to page: lyrics, insights and anecdotes galore - nothing has been overlooked. To be truthful, I came back to Amazon to order another as a gift, but there don't seem to be any available. So glad I ordered early! Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-)

Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today. I'm in New York and tonight's the night! AND, Miranda wins the Pulitzer on the same day. It's been a bit of a day!!!

Don't buy the Kindle version. It is not in Kindle format; it's just photocopies of double columned pages that doesn't fit the screen and is very hard to read. You have to manually enlarge each page separately if you want to read it.
