In 1957, Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board of Education, Melba was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School.

Caution: Abridged Version

It is quite disappointing to me that Amazon says it NOWHERE on the product page, nor does it say so on the cover of the book, but this is an abridged version. The only mention of its abridgement occurs on the title page. Nearly a hundred pages have been cut out of this version. I purchased this book for a class and missed a lot of the references that were given in discussion.

It's a good read, but go for the full version.

DON'T GET THIS VERSION IF YOU NEED IT FOR A SCHOOL PROJECT!!!!!

THIS IS AN ABRIDGED VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOWHERE on the item description does it tell that this is such, but if you need the whole story, say for a school project, like I did, do not, I repeat, DO NOT order this version!!! I got it for my son's summer reading assignment and not until his first week of class did he find out that it was the abridged version of the book!!! He failed EVERY test on it because there was a LOT of information he didn't get from this. If you need the whole memoir, get the version with an artist's depiction of Ms. Beals when she was fifteen in front of a brick wall with the shadows of the 101st Airborne on the bottom half of the cover. It should be an option on the "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought" section. DO NOT GET THIS VERSION IF YOU KNOW YOU NEED THE FULL, UNABRIDGED VERSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise, it is a very good abridgment. Read it to your heart's content, but know that there are about a hundred pages from the full memoir that are missing.

Warriors Don't Cry

The book was excellent. It was well written, the author created a sense that you were right there with her integrating the school. Every time one of the white children spit at her, kicked her, tried to set her on fire or push her down the stairs I was on the edge of my seat rooting for her. Her relationship with Danny the 101st Airborne Ranger who was her bodyguard was very moving, and how she used prayer to moniter her self talk and constantly regain composure and the initiative against her adversarys. This is a must read for anyone who has ever been violently treated as an outsider, a must read for youth struggling with identity and purpose, older people who lived through the era and middle aged people who are struggling with the direction of society.
I was moved by Melba's courage, her passion, her abilty to put her life on hold as a sixteen year old girl coming into her womanhood, for the struggle of her people. Todays youth face a hard road of war and poverty. The financial freedoms that we knew as Americans are fastly fading away. Like Melbas generation the youth face war, racism and an uncertain future. This book hopefully will inspire the next generations of Melbas. In the coming years ahead the youth will face new unprecedented challenges and our society will need warriors like Melba Beal to stand up and say no this is wrong no matter what the consequences.

I have no idea why I'm sopping wet in this photo, but I'm going to guess it's because I rolled in something filthy or spilled something on myself. Hosing me down was my dad’s favorite method for cleaning me off. Here I am with my dad in his garden, which he adores and whose upkeep he takes very seriously. "It's my first love, besides your mother and horse racing. And you and your brothers, too, I suppose," he’s said. My dad used to carry me on his shoulders quite a bit when I was a child--until the time I accidentally urinated on him while I was up there. We were at a neighbor’s house and he quickly ran outside, threw me off, ripped off his shirt, then hosed me down like he was from the CDC and I'd come in contact with the Ebola Virus.

My dad is an avid reader, and all throughout my childhood he’d come home after working for 12 hours and we’d sit on the couch and read together. My family’s trip to the Grand Canyon in 1983 was one of only two family vacations we took. It coincided with the time when my dad started to lose his hair, and decided he'd wear hats to mask his increasing baldness. It wasn’t long before he changed his tune, tossed the caps, and decided he didn’t care what anyone else thought.

A father and son's love knows no boundaries. Four letter words yes, boundaries no.

Reading Justin Halpern's book brought back memories of my own father's words of wisdom. Although my father (a southern gentleman by birth) was somewhat more prudent in his use of curse words and references to sex, he never hesitated in telling his children (or anyone else for that matter) exactly what was on his mind. I remember when I introduced him to my first really serious girlfriend, a young woman who was more than a foot shorter than myself. He took me aside and said, "What's the matter, didn't they have one in your size?" However, when we later announced our engagement he was the first to congratulate us and brought out the bottle of Cold Duck that he was saving for such an occasion.

When the author was 28 years old he was suddenly dumped by his girlfriend and needed a place to live when he made the decision to move back in with his mother and his then retired father. Working from his new "home" as a writer for Maxim Magazine gave him the time (an awful lot of time according to the author) to see his father through new, adult eyes. The terror that he had felt in his youth due to his father's "bluntness" began to be replaced by admiration for the only person that he had ever known who really spoke his mind without self-censorship. It was only then that he began to see the wisdom in his father's tersely worded observations and began posting them on his Twitter page with the same title as this book.

Because Mr. Halpern Sr. has the gift of being able to "swear with great expertise" I can't quote many of them on Amazon, but here are a few of my favorite PG rated quips:

ON THE DEATH OF OUR FIRST DOG
He was a good dog. Your brother is pretty broken up about it, so go easy on him. He had a nice last moment with Brownie before the vet tossed him in the garbage.

ON MY BLOODY NOSE
What happened? Did somebody punch you in the face?!... The what? The air is dry? Do me a favor and tell people you got punched in the face.

ON THE MEDICINAL EFFECT OF BACON
You worry too much. Eat some bacon... What? No, I got no idea if it'll make you feel better, I just made too much bacon.

ON SHOPPING FOR PRESENTS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY
If it's not bourbon or sweatpants, it's going in the garbage... No, don't get creative. Now is not a creative time. Now is a bourbon and sweatpants time.

ON BEING ONE WITH THE WILDERNESS
I'm not sure you can call that roughing it son... Well, for one, there was a (EXPLETIVE) minivan parked forty feet from your sleeping bags.

ON SILENCE
I just want silence... Jesus, it doesn't mean I don't like you. It just means right now, I like silence more.

If you grew up with a Ward Cleaver type of father (or wish that you did) you may find Mr. Halpern's way of expressing himself to be crude, unfeeling, or even uncaring. Far from it. The author augments the pithy quotes (some recent, other's from his childhood) with brief essays that gives the reader a little more of the back story of this unique father-and-son relationship. Is it ideal? I have learned that, for me at least, the best way to judge someone's parenting is by the adult it produces. Justin Halpern's book reads to me as a love letter to a father that always tells it like it is and who made you who you are.

My father passed away at age 87 in 2008. At his wake (we are Irish after all so alcohol was involved) his former co-workers, friends and family paid tribute to him by telling our own little stories and quotes from a man who could be described as both taciturn and brutally honest. The recollections from my three brothers, my sons and myself included stories and things that my dad said that to the outside observer might have also seemed acerbic or even caustic, but to us it was the way that he showed us that he cared

This book is not for those addicted to a PC idea of what a father should be or for those who are easily offended by real life conversation. But if you, like me, value frank and seemingly brutal honesty (especially from someone who brought you into this world) this book will delight you as much as it has me. I only wish that I could give this to my dad for Father's Day. He would have laughed his (BLEEP) off!

Political Correctness Quotient = Zero

To echo what others have said this book is hilarious. It's also sweet and touching. Justin's dad is a gruff Vietnam vet, retired research doctor who is honest to a fault. He's someone who knows himself and has the courage and a burning need to speak his mind. He also loves his family to distraction. Justin's dad is Jewish and his mom a quiet, loving Catholic and though their child rearing approaches seem as different as their religions they make a good parenting team.

Here are a few quotes which are NOT the funniest in the book but one's that are relatively lacking in four letter words:

On Getting an Internship at Quentin Tarantino's Production Company:

"That is one ugly son of a `gun'.....Oh, yeah, no congratulations. If you see him, try not to stare at his face if you've eaten anything."

After Justin moves out"

"You just barge in and take whatever you want, whenever you want it. It's like you're the ********* SS I'm living in ******* Nazi Germany...."

At the End of the Day, at Least You a Have a Family:

"So, there you go. Your mother thinks you're handsome. This should be an exciting day for you."

On a hypothesized life of crime:

"You always got us. We're family. We ain't going anywhere. Unless you go on a ******* killing spree or something."

"I would still love you Justy. I would just want to know why you did it," my mom said earnestly.

All these quotes can seem a bit over the top when you read them out of context but they never come across as glib or hate filled.....just honest. Justin was the youngest of three sons and the last chapter of the book is the story of one of Justin's love affairs gone awry and his dad comforting by telling the story of his first wife's life and death. The best thing about this book, besides the humor of course, is the emotional honestly.

A great worthwhile read

I opened this book last night, and didn't put it down until I read it through. A quick, easy read, this book is gut bustingly funny...and it's not just a bunch of hilarious quotes, it's also a good, heartfelt story with family values and moral components intertwined. The language is very raw, so if you are offended by any or all of the entire curse word dictionary, this book may not be for you.

I found it refreshing that there is someone out there who is all about being completely honest and transparent, and doesn't beat around the bush, especially in society's current state, where everything offends someone somewhere.

Must read.

Master Autodesk Inventor 2013 - A good book

I had never opened the Autodesk Inventor application before purchasing Master Autodesk Inventor 2013. I needed a book that would work well for a complete beginner. This book is so far working great for me. I think if I had had some previous experience I would have been able to hop around the chapters but for me I started at the beginning of the book and am slowly moving forward.

I believe this is a good book for a beginner who wants to know everything about Inventor and has the patience to slowly work through the chapters. If you want to jump right into cool looking projects then this might not be the book for you.

I'm giving it 4 stars because I find it difficult to find info on certain subjects when I do want to jump forward.

good course, if you can stomach the baby talk on the CDs

While the course book is well organized and comprehensive (although you will need your own dictionary. The Living Language books have terrible glossaries which do not even contain all of the words from the vocabulary lists), it is very difficult to get past the ridiculously childish, affected way in which the narrators--particularly the women--speak. You will not hear and adult woman's voice except in lesson 30. All the others sound as if they are breathing helium and talking to you as if you were in a nursery.

Japan is notorious for the infantile "women's speech," but not all Japanese women behave this way. I have lived there and speak from experience.

The narration on courses produced in Japan, such as Kodansha's "Japanese For Busy People" or Gakken's "Japanese For Today" are far more natural and actually sound like mature adults.

I just received this today and I can tell you I am very impressed. It is a lot more than I thought it would be. The book is about the size of a standard book, and 500 pages long. From the first lesson there are very good grammar lessons, vocabulary words, and dialog. This is my fifth foreign language, and I can tell you this course will be very useful for learning Japanese up to an intermediate to advanced level, depending on your level of effort. I have become fairly fluent before with much less to go by. I am very impressed, amazed really, at what I got for fifty dollars. Some have said the female voices are infantile, and not spoken by Japanese natives. I listened to part of the first disc so far and the male and female speakers sounded just like the natives I have heard in countless movies and on the streets of Seattle. Both sexes had normal sounding voices also. I don't know if all of the discs are the same, but it sounds perfectly normal so far. This is an amazing set for fifty dollars. It looks much better than the other sets I have seen. If you want interactive computer programs go with Rosetta Stone for a small fortune. If you want a book with CD's, this is the best one I have found.

Comprehensive introduction

`Ultimate Japanese' is for beginners to this language, but not for beginners to language-learning. I don't know what high school curricula are like in other states, but armed only with an Indiana public education, this text would be difficult to navigate. The grammatical terms are consistent and not watered-down, which is great for a universal understanding of grammar, but may be challenging for the average person.

The layout of the lessons is practical - conversation first, then pronunciation, grammar, symbols, vocab/expressions, and finally exercises. I like this order because it forces you to consider the grammar before you worry yourself about exact definitions. Grammar notes are concise, 'shown' and not 'told'. Instead of relying on complex prose explanations, grammar is taught through examples (though not too many of them that they are repetitive or confusing).

Kana in this book are introduced in groups over a few chapters, then as the book progresses there is further work with symbols, including dialogues and exercises. In later chapters, kanji are introduced a handful at a time. I also like this volume's syllable tables compared to others. The biggest downside is that the main dialogues are romanized, so when it comes time to write - or even read - it will be a bit more of a challenge, but do-able, given the work with Japanese script later in the text. In contrast, 'Japanese for Busy People' presents every conversation first in kana, then romaji, then the English translation, but its exercises are all in romaji; `Ultimate' includes exercises with both kana and kanji.

There are two sets of discs - one (set A) for use with the book, and one (B) that follows the lessons of the book but can be used `on the go' without the text. Readings in set A are performed by native speakers at a relatively natural pace. I haven't heard any English on set A, and there is little on set B. I think the native-English narrator speaks some of the Japanese on set B, but it sounds fluent. Others have noted 'baby-talk' on this program's discs. I'm not far into it, but I haven't found this speech overpoweringly horrendous. I'm taking any `baby-talk' I do register as a generalized cultural affectation. It doesn't bother me.

As an American, I like that the narrator on the audio discs is also American. The audio with Gilhooly's 'Teach Yourself Japanese' is narrated with an English accent - I personally find this very distracting, but that may just be my own linguistics training kicking in to analyze her speech at every turn. Still, having an American narrator in a way involves less 'translating' for me.

Overall this set is highly informative, with little crap to sift through to get to the real meat of the lesson. I'm borrowing it from the library now, but I plan on buying it for myself.

Excellent book from a fine chess teacher

As a novice chess player who only took up the game with any seriousness when in my late 50's (!), I appreciate the rare chess book that includes as much prose as Dan Heisman's A Guide to Chess Improvement, for I find that reading paragraph after paragraph and sometimes page after page of lines like this - 39. Kxg3 f5 40. h4 g6 41. Kf3 Ke6 42. g3 Kd5 43. Ke3 Nc5 44. Bg7 Ne4 45. g4? fxg4 46. Ke2 Ng3+ 47. Kf2 Nh5 48. Bc3 Ke4 49. Ke2 g3 50. Be1 Nf4+ 51. Kd2 Kf3* and on and on and on - taxes my aging brain! Dan, who I had the pleasure of conversing with in a brief email exchange when I requested errata for another of his fine books, seem to be a down to earth guy with relational skills that come across in the written word, that some high level chess players seem to lack (though there are any number of notable exceptions). His tone and approach to teaching through his writings is at once friendly, encouraging, logical, well-paced and demanding, and is never condescending. One of the reasons I decided to take up chess at this point in my life is because I value critical thinking and reasoning, knew that the ability to reason well can decline with age - especially if not exercised - and knew that chess is a game - or sport, as some prefer - that exercises the reasoning faculties (and more, of course, e.g., intuition, pattern recognition, and perseverance). If Dan wasn't a chess teacher I bet he'd make a good analytic philosopher or a logician, as his razor sharp reasoning skills are evident throughout his writings.

A Guide to Chess Improvement is a hefty 381 pages and a good-size (6 3/4" x 9 3/4"), and the printing of the prose and diagrams are as clear as can be on brilliant white, non-glossy paper. (While there are plenty of diagrams in the book, they do not appear on every page. For someone like me who sometimes enjoys reading about chess rather than just studying diagrams and annotated games, this is a plus.) (An index would be an added plus, but this book does not have one.)

As many people no doubt know, radio personality Howard Stern is a chess enthusiast and one of Dan's students. (The United States Chess Federation site has Dan's April 23, 2010 article, "A 'Sirius' Lesson: Teaching Chess to Howard Stern" free for the reading - no membership required. The site is uschess dot org, and if you Google sirius stern heisman a link to the article will be among the first entries to come up.) *(Copied and pasted from the aforementioned article, the final moves of one of Stern's games where he played black.)

I love this book. If you're not familiar with Dan's Novice Nook columns, they're easy to find, and perusing a few should give you a clear sense of what the book is like (and of course one can use Amazon's "look inside" feature to peruse the book and get a sense of its content and layout).

Like being lectured by Treebeard.

Including the part where you realize that Treebeard is right: you've been hasty, very hasty...

Dan Heisman's focus is on removing misconceptions and bad habits. The amount of positive chess information is small. He has only a few points he wants to make and plenty of space to make them in, so he beats them into the ground.

Some of these points will not apply to you. Your circumstances are different, or you already know that. Therefore whole chapters are tedious. The lecturing on how to have a useful relationship with a chess coach, prices, travel, reasonable expectations and so on goes on and on.

The chapters on time management (in other words "do not be hasty") went on and on...

And then I realized that he was right, and that these bits of advice were relevant to me (even though I resisted that idea at first), and that I needed to go through all this patiently as many times as it took for the advice to sink in. (Not just on time management either.)

I've been through the book once, and I'm starting again.

I don't know if this will affect my rating at all. But I can point to several moves in my games that were different from and better than what they would have been if I had not been bearing in mind some advice from A Guide to Chess Improvement, and at other points I dug into alternative lines of play that I would not have considered before, but nothing came of it.

That's pretty good. I've read much more prestigious chess books that had no useful effect on my play or my chess thinking.

Excellent guide for resource available. Covers much ground.

Definitely worth the price. This book is an excellent 'consumer reports' type guide to especially the books available to increase the ability of an individual to play the game, with suggestions for persons at beginner thru intermediate plus levels. There is also good discussion of the needed people resources; including coaching and live play opponents. Much better to spend some time with book, than to just look at book titles on Amazon.com and guess which might be the best for a given person's situation.

About the Author
Joey Yap is the founder of the Mastery Academy of Chinese Metaphysics, a global organisation devoted to the teaching of Feng Shui, BaZi, Qi Men Dun Jia, Mian Xiang and other Chinese Metaphysics subjects. He is also the Chief Consultant of Joey Yap Consulting Group, an international consulting firm specialising in Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology services.

Joey Yap first began learning Chinese Metaphysics from masters in the field when he was fifteen. Despite having graduated with a Commerce degree in Accounting, Joey never became an accountant. Instead, he began to give seminars, talks and professional Chinese Metaphysic consultations around the world, and has become an avid property investor who also holds an interest in diverse businesses.
