Americans who watch cable news are already polarized, and their exposure to partisan programming of their choice has little influence on their political positions. In fact, the opposite is true: viewers become more polarized when forced to watch programming that opposes their beliefs. A much more troubling consequence of the ever-expanding media environment, the authors show, is that it has allowed people to tune out the news: the four top-rated partisan news programs draw a mere three percent of the total number of people watching television.

What Is Music Technology?

This newly defined component of music education means many things to many people. Music technology, a broad subject, has meanings that may differ for music educators, composers, performers, audio producers, electrical engineers, computer programmers, or perceptual psychologists. All of the music activities in these fields intersect in the personal computer. Within the span of the last decade or so, computers in music have gone from being a niche subject to becoming a ubiquitous presence that all music students are bound to encounter in their professional lives. Furthermore, the new and varied role of the computer in music making brings about surprising overlaps with all of these fields.

Prior to the 1980s, "music technology" (if the term was used at all) would most likely have referred to audio engineering, the conversion (transduction) of musical material into electricity for purposes of amplification, broadcasting, or recording. The first step in the process was the microphone, which performed the acoustic-to-electronic conversion. Once the musical material existed in the form of electrical current, it could be sent to an amplifier that would drive a set of speakers, thus relaying the material over a public address system. Alternatively, the electromagnetic radiation that resulted from the electrical current could be broadcast from an antenna for television or radio reception. Or, if the signal were to be recorded, the musicians were likely to be assembled in a recording studio, with a number of microphones strategically placed for optimal sound capture. The signals from the various microphones were combined in a mixer, which allowed a technician to adjust the relative volumes and stereo positions of each microphone's signal. With a mixer, it was also possible to send the signal to processing devices to adjust the character of the sound, making it, for example, sound as though it were occurring in a large room. Following effects processing, the mixed signals could be sent to tape for storage.

Other possible meanings for "music technology" might have included the use of synthesizers for composing electronic music, an activity attractive to musicians who had a penchant for electrical assembly or who had the means to employ technicians to create and maintain the machinery. Perhaps least known to the general public were those who worked in high-end research institutions who had access to computers, sharing time on these mysterious machines with engineers and rocket scientists and programming them to emit sounds and music.

The personal computer has generalized and expanded these models and affected every area of education. Music technology, implying "the use of computers as an aid to music making" is now a subject that all music educators must address in some way. Small desktop computers may now be part of every step of the musical production process just described, acting as performer, mixer, processor, and storage medium. This development has implications for all practitioners of music, regardless of their specialty. Whether they find themselves working at a school, a recording studio, or concert hall, musicians can count on finding computers at work in the production of musical activity. Performers are often expected to send CDs of their performances as part of applications for jobs. Educators are expected to employ the resources of the Internet and multimedia technology to teach students about music rudiments. Composers are expected to provide performers with laser-printed scores and parts. Thus, knowledge of music technology is becoming a core skill of musical training, along with history, figured bass, and Roman numeral notation. Purpose of This Book

With any learning endeavor, it is typically the basics that are most difficult to master. This book is meant to provide an overview of essential elements of acoustics, MIDI, digital audio, and sound recording so that students may understand what musical elements may be stored in a computer and what type of manipulations and representations of musical information are possible. It is written in an attempt to find a balance between simple and straightforward presentations and descriptions that are thorough enough to explain the material without "dumbing it down."

The book is not meant to be a substitute for a qualified instructor. A performer cannot master an instrument without the help of an experienced musician, just as an athlete cannot excel at a sport without the guidance of a coach. But even experienced performers and athletes find it useful to consult a fingering chart or a rule book as a reference. This book is intended to play a similar role for a student learning some aspect of music technology. Different sections will be relevant for different types of projects or different levels of learning. It is broken into short sections in order to allow an instructor to assign reading selectively to focus on areas that are important for a given group of students.

The only assumptions are that students are familiar with a computer operating system and fundamentals of music. Certain concepts are best presented with equations, but no advanced mathematical training is necessary to understand the main points. Computers deal with information in the form of numbers, and different programs may require information to be entered differently. A given program may ask for frequency values or musical pitches, for loudness in decibels or in arbitrary units. Mathematics is not presented for its own sake, but rather to give students alternative views of how to understand and work with music in a computer environment. The cognitive psychologist Marvin Minsky has stated that a thing or idea seems meaningful only when we have a variety of different ways to represent it, providing different perspectives and different associations. Viewing music through the lenses of acoustics, physics, or computer science has the potential to yield rich rewards in the form of new perspectives and associations that they bring to the meaning of music.

Very good text, but has a few mistakes/problems

I have used sections of this book to teach electroacoustic music courses. Overall, it is very good, well organized, and detailed in its treatment. There are, however, a few factual errors, and at least one misconception in the text. Following are the problems I've encountered so far:

Ch. 5 - Representing Numbers

p. 50 - No definition of 'word' as 16, 24, 32, or 64 bit sequence, dependent on design of processor or software system.

p. 51 - The explanation of hexadecimal makes several references to "hexadecimal bits" which should be "hexadecimal digits." The term 'bit' is defined as a 'binary digit', and so is not appropriate in reference to hexadecimal.

p. 52 - Equations at the top of the page are mixed up. Should be:

6(base10) = 01102

-6(base10) = 10012 + 1 = 10102

p. 52 - Sentence that begins, "Numbers that include a decimal point..." is not accurate. There are fixed-point decimal representations as well as floating-point. In fact, the following explanation of floating-point seems rather to be explaining fixed-point decimal representation by focusing on the need to use a certain number of digits (relegating the exponent to 1 byte, for example), rather than explaining how floating-point representation moves (and keeps track of) the decimal point as needed. Also, this discussion leaves the impression that decimal representations are inherently less accurate than integer representation, which is not true.

Ch. 9 - Digital Audio

p. 106 - The sentence which continues after the aliasing equation, "where the minus sign..." should read, "...the frequency is phase inverted."

Extremely valuable for the technically oriented.

This book is an excellent resource, particularly for those with technical orientations in math and science. It requires a basic understanding of physics and calculus, and an understanding of some recording principles. Mark Ballora comes from a very strong background - New York University and McGill University are the top schools in North America for Music Technology - and the information is presented in a logical, straight-forward and easy-to-undertand format. I am currently using the text as a resource for my physics research project, and would recommend it to any music technology student with an understanding of physics and calculus.

Sacred Maya world

An amazing collection of archeological artifacts await the reader who is able to locate this gem of a book. Originally published to accompany a traveling exhibit that boasted the largest collection of Maya ritual life ever assembled., the book reflects the mysteries of the Maya.The artifacts collected and displayed from over 3,000 collected are those that were found deep within the waters of the sacred well or cenote located near the city of Chichen Itza("mouth of the well of the Itza"). This cenote, deep in the jungle of the Yucatan, is like a mini lake, with sheer vertical walls where the Mayans once stood to offer goods or human life to their gods. Having visited the cenote on a trip to the Yucatan once, it made for one of those memorable occasions that last a life time, a step back in time to a world steeped deep in ancient religion prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The cenote was a sacrificial center where the Mayans paid their spiritual debts and honored their gods with gifts made of gold, jade, copper, pottery, wood, textiles, copal and other materials including the ultimate human offering. The objects collected in this book number over 300 and are detailed in full color and black and white. The magnificent pieces are primarily from the Late Classicperiod(A. D. 690-725) through and including the Postclassic period(A.D. 900-1539). The text that accompanies this beautiful book is highly informative but not in an overly scholarly way. The descriptions of the figures sheds light on the subject for the arm chair archeologist in easly understood language without esoteric jargon. Included is a history on the collector, Edward H. Thompson, beginning with his lowering of a bucket in 1904, the burning of his "museum" after the Mexican Revolution and the settlement of the Mexican Supreme Court in favor of Thompson's heirs after his death which allowed the Harvard Peabody Museum to publish this book. Besides the absolute stunning beauty of the creations offered and sheer abundance of objects, the salvaged intact pieces are amazing to have survived so many hundreds of years in the depths of the cenote. At it's height the site rivaled a pilgrimage destination similar to Jerusalem or Rome. This is one of those books that can be viewed over and over again for inspiration or reflection on the arts and rituals of the Maya. Highly recomended for archeology , art or history buffs that want a glimse into a seldom seen collection of pieces that were unexhibited in the Peabodty Museum for over seventy years after being brought up from the silt in the cenote in the early 1900's. These are truly treasures that should not be missed if one is interested in the Maya and the Sacred Well.

Lots of CEO's should read this book

As a long time small business owner I have read hundreds of business books in my time. Some are good, some pathetic, and some ignorant. I have read useful books and books that are only good for firestarters. Some have been written by P.H.D's who don't have a clue about the real world and some that do - but WAYMISH is by far the best and most useful business book I have ever seen or read. I usually keep a dosen or so copies at the store and regularly send them to business owners or suppliers that I like and companies that need help.

Simply written and easily readable in a few hours - I read it about every 6 months and remind myself that the only reason my customers shop at my store - is because (and if) I provide excellent service.

If you own a business or want to start one BUY THIS BOOK. Don't do it later do it now - you won't regret it. My advice is to buy some extra copies to pass around, after reading it you will want to.

Make sure you & your folks aren't doing this!

First, and in the interest of full disclosure: As many of you know, Ray Considine has been one of my closest personal friends, most trusted mentors/business associates since we first met some 35 years ago. He is, in a word, AWESOME!

Now let's talk about the book "WAYMISH" ("Why Are You Making It So Hard . . . for me to give you my money?").

If you will just purchase/read this book, then carefully study your own sales/customer service techniques against it (and those of your entire organization!), you'll quickly discover that you are probably throwing away 20-40% of all your established and potential sales volume. And I'm not exaggerating!

While the "WAYMISH" stories of poor service/missed sales are amusing at first (some are absolutely hysterical!), as you read on, you'll see far more of your own sales/customer service operation than you'd ever want . . . to the point that you'll become absolutely uncomfortable at times. I sure was!

As you know, when going about your own day-to-day activities, the sales/customer service world is frequently staffed by the untrained (our fault!) and absolute morons (accident of birth, I assume). Well, here's a news flash! While we laugh at those poor, sad folks . . . THEY ARE AMONG US! Or, as "Pogo" once said, "We have met the enemy and he is us!"

See, while my "The Closers" series will teach you everything you need to know about closing sales, if you're letting them all get out the back door after that, you can't close enough sales to save yourself!

Let me cut it short with some personal advice: Buy "WAYMISH" from Amazon.com . . . right now, while you're still on this page!

I only review books to which I can honestly give a "5 Star" rating. WAYMISH: WHY ARE YOU MAKING IT SO HARD FOR ME TO GIVE YOU MY MONEY? by Ray Considine and Ted Cohen is a book that should be read by anybody who deals with customers.

It presents lessons that may seem obvious, but unfortunately, many businesses seem to forget the obvious. The result: Customers, facing difficulties, often go elsewhere.

What truly made WAYMISH outstanding was its use of examples, all taken from real companies on how things could and should be done . . . one of my favorites involved Murray Raphel, my marketing guru, during his clothing days:

* [He delivered] a looks-like-every-other London fog trench coat: but in his, your name appears in a HUGE monogram on the inside front flap. "So you can always find your coat on a rainy day in a restaurant cloakroom."

I'm still shaking my head over that one, as well as how other stores approach things:

* At Nordstrom the rule is, "Treat your customers as you would a friend." At Carl Sewell's car dealership the decision to charge for an extra service is, "Would you charge a friend for this?" In essence, it's common sense.

And then there was this approach to marketing research that could be used by any business--or any other organization for that matter:

* A managing partner of a CPA firm was thinking customer service. He called the 25 largest clients and asked for three minutes of the CEO's time to answer two questions:

The Survey:
What do you like about our firm's service?
What do you not like about our firm...or any other CPA

(Note: This is the best and simplest survey any business will ever need.)

Though the authors probably had customer service folks in mind when they wrote WAYMISH, it could and should be read by countless others who deal with the public on any sort of regular basis. Just imagine how much more pleasant life would be if everybody made each and every transaction a pleasant one.

This keeps me consistent and growing vocally.

I would recommend this book with CD. Every voice teacher seems to have his own philosophy, but only with daily exercises can one develop his/her voice. This CD helps me do my exercises and I've seen a dramatic improvemment. Like a personal trainer on CD! Definately worth it. The whole thing is the cost of one lesson with a professional teacher.

Excellent Exercises

The CDs that come with the book offer excellent vocal exercises that strenghthen and expand the voice and range. The book and the CDs are far less expensive than a voice teacher. There is also a poster with a diagram of how the voice is produced-how it resonates throughout the body. An understanding of this is helpful in learning how to "place" the tones.
Also, Mr. Allen's descriptions of where the resonators are and what they will feel like if you are singing properly are very helpful.
I recommend this book to any singer who wants to get her chops together.

Nice retelling of the story for little ones

This isn't an "early reader" book, but a regular story for parents to read to children. It tells the whole story of the movie in abridged but comprehensive form -- all the main plot points are covered, but appropriately for little kids, some of the details are glossed over. Still, Jedi does feature a few scarier scenes in the movie (with Jabba's palace, the rancor, and the Emperor and Force lightning) and so if your smaller child might be scared by those, maybe stick to A New Hope or Empire.

As with the other two books, the artwork is excellent - bold, expressive, and, dare I say it, cute (except the rancor, of course). Everyone is drawn in a bit more modern cartoon style, but they're all recognizable with lots of familiar scenes and details on every page. The sail barge scene, in a two-page spread, features Lando falling off the barge, the droids stuck in the sand, Boba Fett heading into the Sarlacc pit, and Luke with his lightsaber. Even the text is nicely done, with sound-effect words in bold or colored fonts for emphasis. As a geek, I'm happy enough for my kids to be learning all the little details like who the Gamorrean guards are or who Admiral Ackbar is. My 5 and 2.5 year old boys absolutely love this and study every page carefully. Very pleasantly surprised by this version of the story!

Complete movie in tiny form again (with a Lucas Change)

Even these have the Lucas changes :) I bought all three of the original trilogy. They are all great. I was looking for a way to introduce my daughter to the Star Wars Universe. This was perfect. This is the entire story of Return of the Jedi. She has learned all of the characters from these books. They are perfect for the little ones. One thing to note if you are a purest. The last page shows the Jedi ghosts of Ben, Yoda and Anakin after the battle on Endor. And yes it is the Young version of the Anakin and not the older. When I showed it to a friend he immediately asked if Han shoots first in the first book :) Either way, great books check them out for the price.

I love that all the movies are now in kid-friendly books.

And these are actually 'books'. Multi-syllable words like Imperial and captured and Millennium Falcon. When read by a parent, this doesn't matter so much, but for a kid who would read this on their own, they would need to be a more advanced reader.

the artwork and storyline are more playful and cute, very appealing to a younger audience who is new to Star Wars. And for some scenes, like the Sarlacc pit where Boba Fett gets eaten, the Sarlacc burps. I've added a photo of this to this review.

Overall, it's not scary and keeps a light and playful tone throughout.
