Tina Rae Collins is an internationally known, award-winning author who has published fifteen previous books, including a novel, four juvenile novels, a fable, two poetry books, a religious book for women and one for children, a collection of religious articles, a doctrinal book about the end times (The Gathering in the Last Days), a biography of her son Aaron (Aaron Collins Did That), her master's thesis (Snow White: The Story of Eve's Redemption), and her doctoral dissertation (We Are Emmanuel: How Man Became God). She received a bachelor's degree in English from Pikeville College and a master's degree in Theology and PhD in Biblical Studies from Northwestern Theological Seminary. She resides in Lexington, Kentucky, and her greatest personal blessing is spending time with and enjoying her family.

This book is a 10! We loved it!

“When the student is ready, the teacher will appear” certainly applies to my encounter with this book!

The Judaeo-Christian Myth by Tina Rae Collins is an important challenge to the stories and assumptions of the Jewish scribes and early Christian authors whose writings ended up in the Christian Bible. Whether we agree or not with the premise, I commend Tina Rae Collins for her courage, her clear and concise writing, her fair use of sacred writings, and her extensive Bibliography.

Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian church we didn’t dare believe that the stories in our Bible were anything but gospel truth. So when I got into ministerial training, and we learned that ancient cultures had many stories of similar miracles that predated the Jewish prophets or the Christian interpreters by hundreds, even thousands of years . . . what would you say?

Were those older stories of almost identical miracles from other nations and other religions just copied into what became our Bible?

Precisely what, you ask, would young ministerial students say, with girlfriends and wives (may they never meet!) to support? What would the professors at our private church affiliated university say? Our response to such hard questions must certainly sound familiar . . . we just told each other, as the early Christian leaders did for two thousand years . . . that those older stories simply couldn’t be the “real truth,” but were nothing more than the crafty work of the devil, designed to trick unwary Christians. That answer was just what we wanted to hear! And it was good enough. For awhile.

Then years piled up, and some of those literal views began to unravel. I’ll be honest: a few of them just self-destructed on their own.

It’s just me and my college girlfriend (my wife for 40 years) at home now, our kids are gone, and we’re wondering, what do we tell them? Should we order copies of this important book, let them read it, and trust them to handle it without parental supervision?

Our world is tearing itself apart because three main religious groups, the religions of Abraham, took those stories literally.

I’m not trying to dodge the bullet here. As a child of my time, I’m willing to stand up and say, yes, we got some things wrong, but thankfully, we got a few things right.

So I’m not going to stand by and kick the can down the street for another generation. I’ll be bold here, and state a wish: if adherents to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam would read and understand the background of their own sacred texts, I think the world would be a safer place. And just maybe, those great redemptive stories will once again be appreciated for what they are, and the bloodshed will finally end.

This book is adult reading. Tough questions deserve honest answers. It was painful at times, yet liberating. Tina Rae Collins states in this book that she published it as a follow up to her dissertation, which I also purchased and read. A quick look at the Bibliography shows about 600 (six hundred) references, give or take. When we are ready, those resources await.

As Tina so gently reminds us . . . we’ve known these things for a long time.

Remember holding your kids on your shoulders, so they could see even further than you could? Remember asking them what they could see—when you couldn’t know for sure what they were seeing, but you knew, without question, they were telling you the truth?

This book is a 10, two thumbs up, five stars.

Highly Recommended

Though this type of material can be difficult and provocative for the uninitiated, Collins presents it in an extremely accessible and informative manner and in eminently readable prose which is free of the kind of vitriol which can sometimes manifest in this genre when sacred cows are being sacrificed on the altar of rational thought. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in a sober examination of the origins of Judeo-Christian thought, practice, and tradition.

I usually hate cleanses, mostly because of the lack of tacos

I usually hate cleanses, mostly because of the lack of tacos. I mean, how am I supposed to change my life without eating tacos? That's rubbish. That's why this book is so revolutionary- my life is so much better now AND I'm eating delicious tacos all the damn time! It's great! Thank you, Taco Cleanse!

Avocado Yoga and Black Bean Tranquility

I normally hate cleanses. They make you sound like you're dirty inside. That's pretty depressing. And you do them in January, when the weather is cold and you want to be eating warming stews of fatty beef, mashed potatoes and anything with cheese. And why a taco cleanse? Just travel to any dodgy street food stand in Guadalajara and order one with "verduras, todos frescas" and you'll have a cleanse to remember. So why this book? You get to eat tacos, admittedly vegan, but tacos. Once you hide something in a taco, it might as well be tempeh as mystery meat, you'll never be able to tell. Some of the ingredients are not found at regular groceries So you'll have to go to some specialty store to find jackfruit and yeah, tempeh. For those of you not in a rural backwater such as myself, you'll be good with Wegmans or Whole Foods. Alas, here, the CRINKLY kind of cabbage is in the exotic fruits and veg aisle.

There are also exercise tips. When you remove an avocado pit and it inevitably squirts across the counter onto the floor, under the baseboards, don't swear. That's bad for your chi. Instead EMBRACE this karmic event and stoop down and do Avocado Yoga as you retrieve it from under the fridge.

Highly recommended. This is one cleanse book that will make you smile as you toss it onto the "been there, NOT doing that" pile.

Taco-rrefic!

Many people don't know that pictures of tacos can also be detoxifying to your body. From the moment I got this book I could instantly feel the leftover organic dinosaur kale in my body start to be pushed out to make room for tacos. The taco cleanse isn't just a diet, it's a way of life. If you have a dream board, put a picture of a taco on it, order this book, make a taco, and revel in a fulfilled dream.

Chipotle is great (minus the current food poisoning problem they have that is endangering lives), but there's a problem. They're burrito pushers, or even worse, they try to get you to forgo the tortilla replacing it with.... paper? Sure they have tacos, but they treat them like the black sheep of the family. The taco cleanse will help to reshape America's view of what's really important in life: Tacos.

Start with some Mighty Migas, it's a great way to acclimate your body to eating tacos. Before you know it your body will start to be able to eat what it craves: More tacos.

Trees of paradise: All known genera of the palm family in 240 exquisite illustrations   On December 15, 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794–1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking Historia naturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum (Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes), published between 1823–1853. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, including landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections.

This epic folio was based on Martius’s expedition to Brazil and Peru with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, sponsored by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, to investigate natural history and native tribes. From 1817 to 1820 the pair traveled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) throughout the Amazon basin, the most species-rich palm region in the world, collecting and sketching specimens. On their return both men were awarded knighthoods and lifetime pensions.

In his epic work, Martius outlined the modern classification of palm, produced the first maps of palm biogeography, described all the palms of Brazil, and collated the sum of all known genera of the palm family. For apart from his own collection of specimens and notes, Martius also wrote about the findings of others. Martius’s folio is unusual in its inclusion of cross-sectioned diagrams, conveying the architecture of these mighty trees, which central Europeans would have found hard to imagine accurately. Equally remarkable are the color landscapes showing various palms—often standing alone—which have a simple and elegant beauty. This famous work is an unrivaled landmark in botanic illustration and taxonomy.   Text in English, French, and German

This is an extraordinary publication: it is a Folio sized "Thome".
Looking at the large plates, meticiously drawn and coloured, I realise that before the technique of photography there was an obsession with reproducing natural scenes in a realistic manner, especially in the Natural sciences. The craftmanship is extraordinary. Plates depict microscopic plant anatomy, Geograpical maps with global distribution, graphs depicting growth etc. and habitus in situ, in vivo.
It will prove its value again, like it did in 18 something.

What a beautiful book. The antique reproduction drawings of palm trees are amazing. As a collector of palms or an art lover of fine prints this book is a treasure. I almost want to frame many of the pages in beautiful frames.

Please read this review before you buy it!!

*Some spoiler alerts ahead* I hate giving reviews like this but, honestly, this book was like one author started off the writing and then halfway through another author picked up the work. It seemed pretty close to insta-love and then - BAM! - the book completely changes course and there's no sex, she's got cancer and they're fighting and/or at complete odds because she refuses to take any medical action. I pretty much flipped and scanned through the pages just to see how it would end because the writing and dialogue were very lackluster.
Overall, it was a very strangely written book and I can't help but wonder if maybe the author was planning on writing a hot, sexy novel and then discovered the story of a woman who was pregnant, had cancer and tried to go the natural route and wanted to incorporate that in this book. It just didn't flow at all.

The book itself was just ok? The last bit around what Layla had to go through and the fairy tale ending could've been left out.

As with all these stories...sex, sex, and more sex was the theme. As an avid reader I am starting to feel that using sex so much through a novel really highlights an author's lack of creativity with regard to story telling and the true art of writing. I like sex in my books because it's realistic. But I like for the story to be more developed than the sex scenes. The characters were both very surface and you only got glimpses of who they could be. Reading this was like watching a movie versus reading and immersing yourself in its world.

I also do not like the way the pregnancy and Cancer diagnosis was set up. From first hand experience it's not so simple as getting a diagnosis and then making the call off of hope and miracles and thinking that organic eating and holistic measures cure it. The odds are that it alone does not. At the end the author even mentions the real lady who made the choice and of course she died from it. It is someone's choice but the idea that healthy living can keep it at bay considering the aggressiveness of it?

And the undercover agenda of pro-choice that the author is sending could also be left out. I mean really? You go from the raunchiest, nastiest mess of a storyline to...Cancer? And moral decisions? Yeah - that's just bad.

SPOILERS! I'm sorry but I don't find anything sexy about a man-whore who is supposedly in love. BJ was disgusting. Not sexy. Nothing sexy at all. Layla is pretty dumb. She just made me angry. I only read the book for glimpses of Jake and Lily. I would have much rather had read a book about Dominic. Layla getting pregnant was a stupid move as well. What girl wouldn't be on birth control when she had PLANNED on sleeping with a guy who slept with hundreds of girls. What woman wouldn't make him wear a condom. Umm... Hello! Ever heard of std"s! The cancer scare was a failed attempt at depth, but it didn't work. It gets 1 star for Jake, Lily and layla's brothers.

Great Textbook - Avoid the Workbook

This textbook is very well written, easy to understand and well organized. The format is very well laid out with important concepts in separate text boxes throughout the chapters which makes locating key concepts a breeze. The accompanying workbook, however, is not recommended.
