With SIGHT UNSEEN Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen have crafted a literary masterpiece

There is something special that happens when 2 literary forces come together to create something great. It makes it even more special when they are mother and son Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen. With the newest installment of Kendra Michael's journey in the book SIGHT UNSEEN we are able to see how not gifts are used wisely---and in this case it makes for a fascinating read.

From the very beginning SIGHT UNSEEN takes hold of the reader and dares them to not turn the page. Kendra Michaels is able to use her special talents for good but someone who is vying for her attention is using their special talents form evil----and it means trouble will be swirling all around her. Will she be able to piece together the pieces before its too late, or is it possible that the brilliant mind of her antagonist will prove to be her undoing? That is what the reader will be trying to discover, and it is definitely a literary experience worth the read.

Full of action and suspense SIGHT UNSEEN is definitely going to keep your eyes glued to every word.

Two Johansens = 1 Winner of a novel

It has been said that confession is good for the soul. Assuming that's true, let me admit that I did not like the first Iris Johansen novel that I'd read. As such, I've not read another book by the author – until a copy of the new novel, Sight Unseen, fell into my lap. I see that Ms. Johansen and I were simply not on the same page – no pun intended – with that particular book, because this novel really impressed me!

Kendra Michaels is a therapist who employs the power of music to work with her patients. She is also a highly sought-after consultant by law enforcement for her powers of observation and deduction. Miss Michaels had to depend on her senses due to blindness, and maintained her ability to deduce subtle differences in sound and touch even after her sight was restored in an experimental procedure.

In this novel, Miss Michaels must deal with an apparent copycat serial killer, one who is attempting to draw her into his circle by replicating some of the murders which she helped solve earlier in her career. Her attempts to zero in on this killer are counterbalanced by the killer's attempts to zero in on her, as well as her friends and acquaintences.

I found this book to be enthralling, as I tried to determine what the next step would be for both law enforcement and for the criminal. I enjoyed attempting to determine the identity of the killer, with various characters coming under suspicion and either being replaced by a more likely suspect, or being proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be innocent – or by becoming a possible victim.

This is the second book in the Kendra Michaels series. I have already purchased the first book in the series and have added it to my To Be Read list. (And … I think I'm willing to give the author a second chance on some of her other works, as well.)

RATING: After some consideration – 5 stars. The book is well written, the author keeps me entertained, the characters are largely likeable, and the book in general will stay with me after I've moved on to a totally different novel.

DISCLOSURE: I was provided with a free copy of this book by the publisher in the hopes I would provide a review. (I'm sure they hoped for a good review, and a prompt one – but no such conditions were requested nor granted.)

I am a Great fan of Iris Johansen's work and this title doesn't disappoint. I was surprised who the killer turned out to be. I would definitely recommend this book and author.

The Wayfinding Bible

I was fortunate enough to meet Paul Arthur and have dinner at his house in Toronto when I invited him to be part of a presentation on accessible signage I was giving at the annual international convention of the International Sign Association. He was a pioneer in the use of pictographic symbols for wayfinding, but this book is about much more than symbol signs. It was written before the ADA signage standards became widely known, and of course Paul was from Canada, so their codes, which he helped write, were a little different. He makes the subject, in all its complexity, seem entertaining. You get caught up in the beginning pages as he follows someone trying to catch a train on time, and you are hooked -- or at least I was! You might also want to check out his posthumously published book, "Wayfinding: PictograhicSystems / Noverbal. Universal." The publisher is Focus Strategic Communications Incorporated, 1905, Ontario, Canada.

About the Author
Anthony Saunders is the John M. Schiff Professor of Finance and the Chair of the Department of Finance at the Stern School of Business at New York University. Professor Saunders received his PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught both undergraduate and graduate level courses at NYU since 1978. Throughout his academic career, his teaching and research have specialized in financial institutions and international banking. He has served as a visiting professor all over the world, including INSEAD, the Stockholm School of Economics, and the University of Melbourne. He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Salomon Center for the Study of Financial Institutions, NYU. His research has been published in all the major money and banking and finance journals and in several books. In addition, he has authored or co-authored several professional books, the most recent of which is Credit Risk Measurement: New Approaches to Value at Risk and Other Paradigms, John Wiley and Sons, New York, 1999

Good book lacks detailed explanations

The first 6 chapters of this book are almost completely useless and very long winded. They describe different types of financial institutions, one in each chapter in a way, which alternatively could've been condensed into probably 2 chapters. After chapter 6 it gets a little better as far as more complex content. I think the overall content of the book is good but there is just a lot of unnecessary excess throughout.

Only for the most avid Federer fan

Let it be known that there are few more avid fans of tennis in general, and Roger Federer in particular, than me. Thus, it would not have taken much to satisfy my hunger for even a marginally revealing and intimate biography of the game's biggest star. Unfortunately, I'm still hungry.

The book does relate some interesting facts about Federer's childhood, his family, and his entry into the sport of tennis. Federer's maturation from a young hothead and many early losses to possibly "the greatest ever" is described, match by match. But, there is very little emotion or "meat" in what is essentially a matter-of-fact chronological recall of his career through 2008.

The author is regarded as an experienced and renowned tennis writer, which made the presentation even more disappointing. As an advanced player myself, I was hoping for a bit of analysis from a player's perspective of what sets Federer apart from the rest; his shotmaking, techniques, match preparation, mental toughness, etc. I can learn more watching Federer on television.

In fairness, Federer himself has described his off-court life as "boring." Several times throughout the book, the author states how secretive and protective Federer is of his private life. Federer is obviously very good at this, since nothing in the book reveals much the public does not already know. The author is often apologetic for Federer, at times bordering on fawning. As such, it is not a biography, but more a tribute.

For a well-written, revealing look at the seamier sides of professional tennis, read Agassi's book. As for the definitive look at Roger Federer, we're still waiting.

Good info but a little biased towards RF

I have no problems with a biographer sympathizing with his subject, but in my opinion it limits the amount of truths you can uncover about someone's life. However, this is well written. The last quarter is mostly a running commentary of his important matches, but they need to be described to establish context. Please read if you are a Roger Federer fan. I am.
