Review
“I made this book mandatory reading for my Rangers. . . . We went from the worst platoon in the regiment to the best platoon in six months. In training we’d get to the objective so fast they had to hold us back.”

Something is not quite kosher about this book!
By Ernest B.
As a decorated member of the Recondos in 1967 in Vietnam, I found much of this book hard to believe. Unless the situation completely changed from the year I served in the Recondos in 1967 until the time Mr. Chambers served in 1968, I do not believe that they would have allowed a kid who had only recently graduated from Basic Training of eight weeks, Advanced Individual Training of eight weeks, and three weeks of Jump School and assign him to a LRRP unit?

The young man had been in absolutely no combat and had been on only one six day mission when he was handed a M-60 Machine Gun and was assigned to walk slack? I find that extremely hard to believe especially in light of him talking about how the Recondos were the best trained and the hardest fighting unit in the 101st.

After the three schools that Mr. Chambers went to, most of us had Ranger Training. I also had the ground training portion of the Seal School in Hampton Roads and Jungle Training in Panama. I served withThe Recondos for about eight monthe being awarded a Silver Star, Three Bronze Star for Valor, and two Purple Hearts.

If someone with no more training that this soldier brought to the table, I don't believe that he would have gotten an entire Platoon to go out with him. Walking Slack on his second six day mission - Really??

Gratitude from a fellow "baby-boomer" who was traumatized over Nam without stepping one foot incountry
By yimei Mullen
Since my 1965 graduation from high school I have been conflicted about choosing the Army National Guard as my alternative service to Vietnam. I assuaged my guilt and feelings of cowardice with a mental commitment to serve Vietnam vets after I had earned my license to practice law. This I did whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Regardless, Chambers words rocketed me to the jungles of this far off country and placed me in the middle of a war zone. I was privileged to vicariously serve in his elite groups of heroes.
His "G I humor" that was so effectively portrayed allowed me, for the moment, to believe that I was indeed an accepted member of his inside band of brothers.
I even learned intimate details that were formally known exclusively to thIs tight group of warriors.
What a privilege!
Sgt Chambers humble presentation of himself and his contributions has allowed me a realistic perspective in self- forgiveness as to choices made in my past life. Perhaps I owe him counseling fees! SSgt Patrick Mullen

Remarkable Story With First-Rate Writing
By J. E. Nelson
I have long been a fan of books about history and military conflicts. I like to listen to audiobooks in the car while shuttling the kids around to and from school, so I was pretty pleased when I found an audio version of Recondo for cheap.

The content of the book is not a surprise. Recondo is the author's account of serving with a Long Range Recon unit during the Vietnam War. The book covers his experiences in the military from enlisting to going his experiences after the war. For others that have read other books about LRRPs, Recondo starts roughly about the same time as "Eyes of the Eagle" by Gary Linderer ends. Both authors served in the same unit, so if you have read Gary Linderer's books, there may be a bit of overlap.

What I did find surprising in this book is the author's ability to tell a story. In my opinion, Mr. Chambers is an extremely talented storyteller. Throughout the entire book, I felt as if I were there. His writings made me feel the excitement of battle, the fear of being the new guy and doing nothing right, and the dejection that came with no one seeming to care about the fact he made it home. Throughout the entire book, I felt as if I were sitting in the backyard with a beer, taking face to face with the author, watching the sunset with some steaks searing away on the grill.

I particularly enjoyed the ending of the book. I like to read about the military and war. I am fascinated with the stories of the people who have served our fine nation, not really the blood and guts aspect. At the end of the book, the author discusses his return home. I found a scene that he described at a party particular disturbing, as it seemed no one cared about the fact this fine young man just came back from serving his country. It offered a glimpse of an aspect of war not covered by many books.

The narrator of the audiobook, Brian Hallas, was an excellent choice. This deep, gravelly voice gave the feel of a story being told by an old, battle seasoned Sergeant. Personally, I would have paid twice as much for an unabridged version of this story.

Overall, this is one of the two best books I have heard/read on the Vietnam War. The author is a talented writer. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the life of a soldier in combat, has an interest in the Vietnam War, or LRRPs.
